Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, effuse, grey-green to whitish grey, finely granulose, the granules 30-60(-80) μm thick, often proliferating to form a rather thick crust, usually forming large patches. Apothecia micareoid, pale brown to pink, often faintly white-pruinose, 0.2-0.5 mm across, convex to subglobose, without a distinct proper margin. Proper exciple not developed; epithecium pale brown due to dense, small crystals dissolving in K; hymenium colourless or with pale brown vertical streaks, 45-50 µm high; paraphyses branched and anastomosing, 0.8-1 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells up to 2.5(-3) µm wide; hypothecium reddish brown, K+ yellowish brown. Asci 8-spored, clavate to cylindrical-clavate, with an unstained wall and a K/I+ blue outer layer and apical dome, the latter with a non-amyloid, cylindrical axial mass. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ovoid to oblong-ellipsoid, (7-)8-11 x 2.7-3.7 µm. Pycnidia 0.08-0.16 mm wide, 0.14-0.3 mm tall, numerous, sessile or more or less stalked, somehow barrel-shaped, grey brown to dark grey, but usually thinly white-tomentose, the wall dull brown, K-, N+ reddish brown, but green and K+ intensifying green and N+ red near the ostiole. Conidia shortly oblong or wider at one end, mostly biguttulate, 3.5-4.7 x 1.5-2 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid, the cells 7-14 µm wide. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.Note: the only Italian sample, collected on Olea at 385 m, is one of the few extra-British records. Included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Critically Endangered” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c). For further details see Sérusiaux & al. (2010).
