Distribution: N - Lomb (Brackel 2016).
Description: Thallus inapparent, not lichenized, immersed in the thalli of Cladonia-species. Apothecia arthonioid, emarginate, 0.1-0.2 mm across, scattered or clustered, with a brownish black, often greenish-pruinose disc. Proper exciple poorly developed; epithecium olivaceous, K+ intensifying green; hymenium pale brown to colourless, 25-35 μm high, I+ red, K/I+ blue; paraphysoids thread-like and flexuous, branched, the apical cells 2.5-5.5 μm wide; hypothecium pale to medium brown. Asci 8-spored, broadly clavate to subglobose, semi-fissitunicate, with a large apical dome and a distinct ocular chamber, Arthonia-type. Ascospores 1-2(-3)-septate, hyaline, fusiform, soleiform or clavate, 10.5-13.5 x 3.5-4.5 µm, the upper cell larger, the lower cell becoming subdivided at a later stage, surrounded by a thin gelatinous sheath when young. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: a lichenicolous fungus growing on Cladonia-species, whose distribution in Italy is still poorly known. See also A. coniocraeae, with usually 1-septate but sometimes 2-septate ascospores.
