Micarea viridileprosa Coppins & van den Boom
in van den Boom & Coppins, Lichenologist, 33: 87, 2001.
Synonyms:
Distribution: S - Camp (van den Boom & Coppins 2001).
Description: Thallus crustose-subleprose, thinly episubstratic, made up of bright green goniocysts, forming up to 8 cm wide patches. Goniocysts consisting of a few algal cells incompletely surrounded by hyaline hyphae, 12-19 μm wide, often coalescing into 25-45 μm wide granules, locally proliferating and giving the impression of irregular soralia producing farinose soredia. Apothecia usually absent, micareoid, adpressed to semi-immersed, 0.1-0.5 mm across, whitish, convex, without a distinct proper margin. Proper exciple poorly developed, most evident in young apothecia, colourless, of radiating and anastomosing hyphae; epithecium scarcely differentiated from the hymenium; hymenium colourless, 35-50 μm high; paraphyses numerous, richly branched, 1.5-2 μm thick, the apical cells hardly wider; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate to cylindrical-clavate, with an unstained wall and a K/I+ blue outer layer and apical dome, the latter with a non-amyloid, cylindrical axial mass. Ascospores 0-1(-2)-septate, hyaline, oblong-ellipsoid or obovoid, 8-12(-14) x 1.3-2 μm, often with 1-4 oil droplets. Pycnidia very rare, grey brown, sessile to stalked, 2-50 μm wide, the wall grey-brown, K+ and C+ violet. Conidia narrowly ellipsoid to fusiform, 4.5-6 x 1.3-2 μm. Photobiont micareoid, the cells 4-7 μm wide. Spot tests: thallus and apothecial sections K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with gyrophoric acid; pycnidial walls with an unknown olivaceous pigment. Note: a recently-described, mostly sterile species found on a wide variety of acid substrata in humid lowland areas; probably more widespread in semi-natural sites of Tyrrhenian Italy. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Critically Endangered” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
