Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, finely rimose-areolate, chalky white to pale yellowish white, sometimes delimited by a dark prothalline line. Apothecia lecanorine, 0.3-1(-1.5) mm across, prominent, sessile and constricted at base, rounded or irregular in outline, sometimes confluent, with a dark brown to black, sometimes umbonate disc, and a thick, entire to crenulate, white to bluish white thalline margin. Epithecium brown, c. 15 μm high, with brownish crystals soluble in K; hymenium colourless, c. 60 μm high, I+ blue; paraphyses coherent, capitate; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, elongate-clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, tall tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (8-)10-14 x 5-7 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P- or P+ orange; apothecial margin always P+ bright orange. Chemistry: thallus or at least apothecial margin with pannarin.Note: a calcicolous species, probably more widespread, at least in the mountains of Southern Italy.
