Distribution: C - Sar (Rizzi & al. 2011). S - Si (Ottonello & Puntillo 1995).
Description: Thallus crustose, usually poorly evident, of more or less dispersed, rounded, white-grey to yellowish grey granules most evident near the apothecia. Apothecia lecanorine, 0.2-0.8 mm across, sessile and constricted at base, with a flat to slightly convex, pale brown, epruinose disc, and a prominent, smooth, entire or slightly crenulate thalline margin. Thalline exciple 70-160 μm wide, corticate, filled with two types of crystals visible under polarized light: coarse crystals soluble in K and insoluble in N, and small crystals insoluble in K and in N; epithecium yellow-brown, K-, N-, with small crystals insoluble both in K and in N; hymenium colourless, 50-60 μm high; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched in upper part, 1.5-2 μm thick at base, the apical cells slightly swollen; hypothecium colourless or very pale yellow, 70-80 μm high, without crystals. Asci 8-spored, clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, tall tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid, (8.5-)10-12 x 5-7 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecial margin K-, C+ pink, KC- or KC+ pink, P-; apothecial disc K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus with gyrophoric acid and lichenxanthone.
Note: a rather poorly known, mostly northern taxon of the P. albescens-complex, occurring on coastal siliceous rocks. The Italian records are somewhat dubious. See also notes on P. liguriensis and P. oyensis.
