Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic or thinly episubstratic, whitish to pale grey, sometimes poorly evident. Apothecia lecanorine, sessile, strongly constricted at base, 0.2-1.5(-3) mm across, with a brownish-black to olivaceous brown, but often densely white-grey-pruinose, mostly flat disc, and a thin, crenulate, white-pruinose thalline margin. Thalline exciple 60-140 μm thick, corticate, without or with a few crystals only; epithecium pale yellow to pale brown, with an epipsamma of crystals soluble in K and insoluble in N; hymenium colourless, 45-60 µm high; paraphyses 1-1.5 μm thick, simple or sparingly branched, the apical cells usually pigmented, up to 3 μm wide; hypothecium colourless or pale yellowish, 60-65 μm high. Asci 8-spored, elongate-clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, tall tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to narrowly ellipsoid, (8-)9-13(-16) x 4-6(-7) µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: a circumpolar, arctic-alpine lichen found on plant debris and mosses over calciferous substrata from the Oromediterranean belt to the Arctic zone. Common throughout the Alps, also known from the Apennines.
