Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, smooth, grey, usually poorly evident, not lichenized. Perithecia black, subglobose, 0.21-0.28 mm across, scattered or arranged in lines of 4-8. Involucrellum dimidiate, dark reddish brown, K-, clypeate, the amorphous pigment localized in the cell walls; exciple very thin, poorly evident, colourless; pseudoparaphyses short- and broad-celled, persistent, moniliform, branched and anastomosing, the cells 6.5-7 µm long, 13-1.9 µm thick. Asci 8-spored, obpyriform, fissitunicate, with two functional wall layers, with a distinctive apical region lacking a nasse, 40-55 µm long. Ascospores 1-septate, constricted at septum, hyaline, with a short upper cell and an elongate, pointed lower cell (tadpole-shaped), 14-17(-20) x 4-5(-6) µm, the mature spores often with a median constriction in the lower cell; perispore thin, visible only in immature spores. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: a recently-described, non-lichenised species, to be looked for elsewhere in Italy.
