Description: Thallus crustose, inconspicuous and often poorly evident, not lichenized. Perithecia black, matt or somehow shiny, more or less circular in outline, scattered, or clustered, 0.1-0.25 mm across. Involucrellum dimidiate, brown both in water and in K, of compacted hyphae and bark cells; exciple thin, usually colourless, surrounding the centrum; pseudoparaphyses short- and broad-celled, 1.5-2.5(-3) μm thick, the cells 3-8 μm long, much branched, more or less moniliform; downwardly projecting periphysoids present near the ostiole. Asci 8-spored, obpyriform, fissitunicate, with two functional wall layers, with a distinctive apical region lacking a nasse, (35-)40-55(-60) x (13-)15-22 μm. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline but often turning yellowish brown and 3-septate when overmature, slightly constricted at septum, the cells of equal size, often biguttulate, but without median constrictions, 16-20(-23) x 4.5-5(-6) μm, with a usually distinct c. 1 μm thick (in K), minutely verruculose perispore. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a holarctic, Mediterranean to boreal-montane early coloniser of smooth bark, especially on twigs of a wide variety of trees, rarer, and restricted to sheltered situations in dry Mediterranean Italy; probably non-lichenised.
