in Ertz & al., Lichenologist ,53: 57, 2021. Basionym: Opegrapha corticola Coppins & P. James - Lichenologist, 11: 162, 1979.
Synonyms:
Distribution: C - Tosc, Laz.
Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic or partially endosubstratic, grey green in shade, pale brown in exposed situations, sorediate, usually without a distinct prothallus. Soralia ochraceous yellow to pale grey-brown, turning cream-coloured in the herbarium, at first punctiform, 0.2-0.7 mm across, later often confluent into 2-3 mm wide, irregularly shaped, flat to convex sorediate patches, with finely granulose soredia. Perithecia rare, scattered, immersed in the thallus with usually only the upper part of the perithecia visible, sometimes laterally covered by a thalline layer, 0.4-0.6 mm across, pale reddish brown to dark brown, often darker around the ostiole. Exciple colourless to yellowish, c. 30-40 µm thick laterally, becoming thicker (60-70 µm) around the ostiole, of hyphae with thick gelatinized walls, I-, K/I-; hymenium colourless, not inspersed with oil droplets, I+ orange-red, K/I+ blue (mainly the ascus walls); paraphyses simple, (1.5-)2 µm thick, the apical cells not widened; periphysoids simple or with short lateral branches, 20-40(-50) µm long. Asci > 100-spored, cylindrical, tapering towards the apex, the wall thin, I+ light blue, without a tholus. Ascospores (2-)3-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid-oblong with rounded ends, 7.5-13 x 3-5 µm, without a gelatinous sheath. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: a western European, mild-temperate species growing on the trunks of ancient trees, especially Quercus ilex; easy to overlook, being almost always sterile, but certainly extremely rare, and confined to Tyrrhenian Italy. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Endangered” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
