Description: Thallus crustose, thin smooth, continuous to rimose, white, greyish white or pale ochre-coloured, sometimes inconspicuous, without a distinct prothallus. Apothecia black, lirelliform, 0.3-0.7(-1.5) x 0.1-0.3 mm, half-immersed in the thallus, simple to rarely stellate, usually sinuous, with a slit-like, epruinose disc partly slightly widened with age. Exciple black, closed below the hymenium; epithecium brown; hymenium colourless, 45-70 µm high, I+ reddish; paraphysoids branched and anastomosing, c. 1 µm thick, the apical cells hardly swollen; subhymenium brownish; hypothecium brown-black to black, carbonized. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the inner layer of the endoascus amyloid throughout, the apical ring hardly visible, Vulgata-type. Ascospores 4-7(-8)-septate, hyaline, acicular to fusiform, straight or slightly curved, (18-)20-27(-32) x 2-4.5 µm, with a thin, poorly evident gelatinous perispore. Pycnidia numerous, black, epruinose, immersed or subimmersed. Conidia curved, worm-like, of two sizes: 3-7 x 1-1.5 µm, and 6-8.5 x 0.7-1 µm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances. Note: a mild-temperate lichen found on old trees in open woodlands, mainly Tyrrhenian in Italy; closely related to O. vulgata, but differing in the shorter conidia.
