Description: Thallus foliose, broad-lobed, heteromerous, dorsiventral, medium-sized to large, to 15(-20) cm in diam., up to 1.5 mm thick, bluish to greenish grey, dark green when wet, loosely attached. Lobes elongate, concave, contiguous, with rounded ends, up to 3 cm broad, to 10 cm long, often imbricate, with plane to ascending, often inrolled, erect-tomentose margins. Lower surface veinless, pale brown near margins, black in central parts, with sparse, fasciculate, up to 3 mm long, dark rhizines. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous; lower cortex absent. Apothecia extremely rare (not seen in Italian material), terminal on short ascending lobes, brown-black, convex. Paraphyses simple, distinctly thickened above. Asci 8-spored, fissitunicate, the thickened apex with a K/I+ blue ring, Peltigera-type. Ascospores 3-5-septate, hyaline, acicular, thin-walled, (45-)52-70(-90) x 2.6-6.5 μm. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc the cells not in long chains). Spot tests: all negative or medulla weakly C+ red. Chemistry: five chemotypes with different combinations of tenuiorin, methyl gyrophorate, gyrophoric acid, 3-5-hopane triterpenoids, zeorin, and dolichorrhizin.Note: a circumpolar, arctic-alpine lichen found in grasslands and scrublands near and above treeline, often amongst mosses, on siliceous substrata; most common in the Alps, but also found in the Southern Apennines.
