Description: Thallus crustose, more or less continuous when young to cracked-areolate, the areoles finally convex and wart-like, yellowish green to yellowish grey, bright sulphur yellow in sun-forms, pale yellowish grey in shade forms, rarely with a grey prothallus, covered in minute, globose to cylindrical-clavate isidia which later sometimes break down into granular, pale yellow soredia. Apothecia very rare, perithecioid, immersed in sorediate-isidiate thalline warts (1-5 per wart), appearing as brown punctiform dots. Exciple thick; paraphyses lax, branched and richly anastomosing. Asci 4-8-spored, broadly cylindrical, the apex with a broad ocular chamber, the outer sheath K/I+ blue, otherwise K/I-, with an inner extensible layer, Pertusaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, thick-walled, narrowly fusiform, 60-100 x 25-40 µm, the wall 7-10 μm thick. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K- (rarely K+ yellow turning red), C+ orange, KC+ orange, P- (rarely P+ yellow-orange), UV+ orange. Chemistry: thiophaninic acid, sometimes with additional O-methylperlatolic, or stictic, norstictic or confluentic acids, and other unidentified xanthones.
Note: a mild-temperate to Mediterranean species with optimum in open oak forests, mostly on old trees, rarer in Northern Italy, still common along the Apennines. Epiphytic records of P. flavicans from Lombardy, by Zocchi & al. (1997) and from Basilicata by Potenza (2006) probably refer to this species.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: bark
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by soredia, or soredia-like structures (e.g. blastidia)
Most common in areas with a humid-warm climate (e.g. most of Tyrrenian Italy)
