Distribution: C - Tosc, Laz, Sar (Nöske 2000). S - Cal (Puntillo 1996).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, 1-3(-4) mm thick, grey to grey-brown, sometimes zonate, markedly papillate, the papillae isidia-like, 1-2 mm wide, bearing at the top an initially punctiform, then expanded and 0.7-1 mm wide, white soralium with granulose soredia. Apothecia extremely rare, immersed on the top of fruiting papillae, with an expanded, dark grey to blackish disc. Hymenium colourless, the hymenial gel not or only weakly amyloid; paraphyses lax, branched and richly anastomosing. Asci 1-spored, broadly cylindrical, the apex without a distinct ocular chamber, the outer sheath K/I+ blue, otherwise K/I–, with an inner extensible layer, Pertusaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, 180-200 x 60-70 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla and soralia K+ faintly yellow-brown, C-, KC+ reddish brown, P+ bright red. Chemistry: fumarprotocetraric acid, plus variable amounts of succinprotocetraric acid.Note: on steeply inclined to vertical surfaces of siliceous rocks in humid areas, usually below the montane belt; mainly Tyrrhenian in Italy.
