Physcia biziana var. phyllidiata Poelt & Vězda

in Vezda, Lich. Rar. Exs., Fasc. 9: 3. 1993.
Synonyms:
Distribution: C - Sar (Nimis & Poelt 1987).
Description: Thallus foliose, heteromerous, dorsiventral, narrow-lobed, closely adpressed, forming orbicular to irregular, up to 3(-4) cm wide rosettes. Lobes 1-1.5 mm broad, flat to convex, emaculate, entirely white-pruinose, with a coarse, granular pruina, the margins densely phyllidiate, the phyllidia stout, ascending, involute and appearing convex, crowded in central parts of thallus. Lower surface white to brownish, with simple rhizines. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous; medulla white; lower cortex prosoplectenchymatous, with the lowermost part gradually forming rounded, isodiametric cells. Apothecia unknown. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: upper cortex K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P- or P+ faintly yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: upper cortex with atranorin.
Note: this relatively large saxicolous lichen, which is distinctly phyllidiate, is also known from Austria (Steiermark), where it grows on steeply inclined surfaces of volcanic rocks. This taxon was overlooked by Nimis (1993) in the first checklist of Italy.
Growth form: Foliose, narrow lobed
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by isidia, or isidia-like structures (e.g. schizidia)
Poorly known taxon in need of further study
