Description: Thallus foliose, heteromerous, dorsiventral, rather loosely adnate, forming orbicular or rarely irregular, up to 6(-8) cm wide rosettes. Lobes linear-elongate, discrete to somewhat irregularly rounded and partly imbricate, 1-2(-3) mm broad, flat to slightly concave. Upper surface grey-brown or brown, bluish pruinose at least at lobe-tips, with primarily marginal, linear-elongate, bluish grey soralia bearing granulose, pseudocorticate and isidioid soredia. Lower surface tan-brown (almost never white) in marginal parts, dark brown or black in central parts, with black, squarrosely branched rhizines. Upper cortex scleroplectenchymatous(cell lumina <2.5 µm); medulla white; lower cortex irregularly prosoplectenchymatous. Apothecia rare, lecanorine, up to 3 mm across, with a dark disc and a usually sorediate thalline margin. Epithecium brown; hymenium and hypothecium colourless; paraphyses slender, simple or forked in upper part, the apical cells clavate, with a thin, dark brown cap. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, ellipsoid, 26-32(-35) x 13-18(-20) µm, thickened at septum but not at apices, Physconia-type. Pycnidia rare, black, immersed. Conidia 4-6 x c. l µm. Spot tests: cortex, medulla and soralia K-, C-, KC-, P-, very rarely the soralia K+ and KC+ faintly yellow. Chemistry: without lichen substances or very rarely soralia with variolaric acid.Note: on mossy rocks along steep slopes, and on trunks of deciduous trees in the montane belt; some Italian records could refer to P. perisidiosa, which is more common in Italy.
