Synonyms: Catapyrenium dermatocarpoides (Anzi) Jatta; Endocarpon anzianum Garov. nom. illegit. non Dermatocarpon anzianum Servít; Verrucaria dermatocarpoides (Anzi) Stizenb.
Distribution: N - Lomb (Breuss 1996b).
Description: Thallus squamulose, brown, matt, the squamules 1-3 mm wide, 0.2-0.4(-0.5) mm thick, contiguous, not overlapping, more or less convex, indistinctly lobulate, with down-turned margins; lower surface pale, attached by 4.5-5.5 μm thick, hyaline rhizohyphae. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous, 25-30 μm thick, the cells 6-9 μm wide, covered with an up to 25 μm thick epinecral layer; medulla of globose cells intermixed with elongated cells; lower cortex absent. Perithecia black, laminal, immersed in the squamules, pyriform, 0.25-0.3 μm across, without involucrellum. Exciple dark brown to brown-black throughout,of tangentially arranged, elongate cells; periphyses present around the ostiole, measuring 20-30 x 2.5-3 μm, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid. Asci 8-spored, clavate, thin-walled, I-, apically slightly thickened, with a small ocular chamber, 60-70 x 15-18 μm. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid, 15-17 x 7-8 μm, thin-walled. Photobiont chlorococcoid (Diplosphaera). Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances. Note: known only from the type collection, on soil in fissures of serpentine rocks.
