Ann. Mus. Nat. Hungar., n. ser., 7: 271, 1956.
Synonyms: Catapyrenium adami-borosi (Szatala) Breuss
Distribution: C - Sar. S - Cal (Puntillo 1996), Si.
Description: Thallus squamulose, pale to medium brown, sometimes reddish brown, dull to slightly shiny, usually loosely attached. Squamules more or less rounded, smooth, (3-)6-12 mm broad, 0.4-0.7 mm thick, flat to concave, scattered to contiguous, the often up-turned margins not swollen. Lower surface black except for a pale marginal zone, attached by pale rhizohyphae. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous, 50-80 μm thick, with an up to 15 μm thick epinecral layer; medulla prosoplectenchymatous, with 3-5 μm thick, filamentous hyphae; lower cortex 50-60 μm thick, of angular, 12-17(-20) μm wide cells arranged in vertical rows, the lowermost ones with a black pigment. Perithecia frequent, laminal, immersed in the squamules, globose to pyriform, up to 0.55 mm wide, without involucrellum. Exciple pale throughout; hamathecium of periphyses measuring 40-50 x 2.5-3.5 μm, interascal filaments absent. Asci 8-spored, subcylindrical, thin-walled, non-amyloid and without an ocular chamber, 80-90 x 14-18 μm. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, thin-walled, uniseriately arranged in the asci, 14-17 x 6-7.5 μm. Pycnidia multilocular, Dermatocarpon-type, marginal, prominent, to 250 μm in diam. Conidia bacilliform, (4.5-)5-6(-6.5) x 1-1.5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid (Myrmecia). Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a mainly Mediterranean (-montane) lichen found on soil derived from metamorphic base-rich rocks in dry grasslands.
