Ann. naturhist. Mus. Wien, 98B: 41, 1996. Basionym: Catapyrenium imbecillum Breuss - Stapfia, 23: 80, 1990.
Synonyms:
Distribution: S - Cal (Puntillo 1996).
Description: Thallus squamulose, brownish, dull to somewhat shiny, the squamules 2-5 mm broad, 190-380 μm thick, rounded to mostly undulate, concave to flattened, smooth, with an up-turned edge. Lower surface black, brown at the periphery, attached by colourless, 5-6 μm thick rhizohyphae. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous, 28-88 μm thick, with or without an epinecral layer; medulla prosoplectenchymatous, 30-107 μm thick, of 3-5 μm thick, elongated cells; lower cortex clearly delimited from the medulla, (20-)40-85 μm thick, of roundish to angular, irregularly arranged, 6-16 μm wide cells. Perithecia frequent, laminal, pyriform, immersed in the squamules, up to 0.4 mm wide, without involucrellum. Exciple pale throughout; paraphyses absent, substituted by periphyses measuring 40-50 x 2.5-4 μm. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, thin-walled, non-amyloid and without an ocular chamber, 70-80 x 12-15 μm. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, thin-walled, uniseriately arranged in the asci, (12-)14-18(-20) x 6-8 μm. Pycnidia multilocular, Dermatocarpon-type, marginal, poorly evident. Conidia bacilliform, 3-6 x 0.5-1.5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid (Myrmecia). Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a terricolous species known from the Austrian Alps and from several isolated stations in southern Europe, with optimum near and above treeline; to be looked for in the Alps.
