Description: Thallus foliose to subfruticose, loosely adnate, (3-)8-15(-20) cm across. Lobes thin (<1 mm), papery, up-curved, to 1.5(-3) cm wide, sometimes strap-shaped, greenish grey to pale greenish brown, often with darkened areas, smooth to strongly reticulately wrinkled, without distinct pseudocyphellae but often with an incomplete network of white maculae, the margins irregularly indented, bearing simple to coralloid isidia which, when abraded, resemble granular soredia. Upper cortex c. 15-25 µm thick, more or less prosoplectenchymatous, with a non-pored epicortex, often I+ blue, the cell walls with the Cetraria-type lichenan and isolichenan; medulla white; lower cortex 16-25 µm thick. Lower surface black towards center, spotted brown or white towards margins, shiny, smooth or reticulately wrinkled, sometimes coarsely foveolate, with usually scarce, simple, short rhizines. Apothecia very rare, lecanorine, 0.5-2 cm across, submarginal, with a brown to brown-black disc. Epithecium brown; hymenium colourless, I+ blue; parpahyses simple or sparingly branched; hypothecium thin, colourless, I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to ovoid, 4-8.5 x 3-5 µm. Pycnidia marginal, immersed. Conidia sublageniform, 6-7 x c. 1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: upper cortex K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P- or P+ faintly yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: upper cortex with atranorin and chloroatranorin; medulla with caperatic acid. Note: a cool-temperate to circumboreal species, abundant in the montane and subalpine belts of the Alps, on acid bark, both of beech and of conifers, sometimes on lignum and even siliceous rocks, becoming progressively rarer along the Apennines. Molecular data revealed 2 clades, both present in Europe, which are hardly distinguishable morphologically (Asher & al. 2023).
