Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, forming orbicular, whitish to grey-green patches, without brown hyphae, not lichenized. Perithecia black, matt, scattered to clustered, at first covered by a thin layer of periderm, later projecting with a slightly flattened apical part, round in outline, c. 0.2-0.25 mm across. Involucrellum dimidiate, c. 45 μm thick, K-; exciple colourless, surrounding the centrum; pseudoparaphyses persistent, branched and anastomosing. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, fissitunicate, c. 60-75 x 24 μm. Ascospores 3-septate, slightly constricted at septa, soon turning brown, long-ellipsoid to fusiform, 22-26 x 5-7 μm. Photobiont: probably absent. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: a pioneer, non-lichenised species growing on the bark of coniferous and deciduous trees; the sample from Italy was collected by G. Thor in the Adamello Natural Park, on Sorbus aucuparia.
