Synonyms: Acarospora cyclocarpa (Anzi) Jatta; Biatorella cyclocarpa (Anzi) Lindau; Polysporina cyclocarpa (Anzi) Vězda; Sarcogyne cyclocarpa (Anzi) J. Steiner
Distribution: N - Ven, TAA (Kantvilas 1998, Knudsen & Koucourkova 2011, Nascimbene & al. 2022), Lomb (Kantvilas 1998), Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004), Lig (Giordani & al. 2016).
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, poorly evident. Apothecia lecideine, dull black, epruinose, sessile, irregular to almost star-shaped, 0.5-1(-1.5) mm across, often in small clusters, the disc rough, with carbonized concentric ridges (gyrose), often umbonate, the margin split, forming a series of segments at angles to each other, finally poorly evident. Proper exciple 40-80 µm wide, of radiating thin-walled hyphae, with a carbonized outer layer, dull reddish-brown to colourless within; epithecium c. 10 μm thick, pale yellow-orange; hymenium yellow-orange in thick sections, colourless in thin sections, 85-100 μm high, the hymenial gel hemiamyloid, K/I+ light blue fading to light red; paraphyses coherent, simple to sparingly branched, regularly septate, 1-2 μm thick at mid-level, the apical cells to 3 μm wide, with a pigmented cap; subhymenium hyaline, 40-80 µm high, I+ blue; hypothecium hyaline to yellowish, 20-25 μm thick, continuous with exciple, I-. Asci 100-200-spored, cylindrical to almost saccate, strongly thickened at apex, the apical dome K/I-, the outer coat K/I+ blue, 40-60 x 15-20 µm. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 3.5-5(-6) x (1-)1.5(-2.5) μm, the immature ones halonate. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances. Note: on dolomite and calcareous schists, more rarely on pure limestone, with optimum above treeline; probably restricted to the Alps; closely related to S. urceolata.
