Distribution: N - Frl, Ven, TAA (Caniglia & al. 2002, Nascimbene & al. 2022), Lomb, Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004), Emil (Tretiach & al. 2008, Fariselli & al. 2020), Lig (Brunialti & al. 1999). C - Tosc, Sar (Nöske 2000, Rizzi & al. 2011, Giordani & al. 2013). S - Camp (CLU 5378), Cal (Puntillo 1996, Sérusiaux 1998), Si (Grillo 1998, Grillo & Caniglia 2004).

Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, brownish green to almost black, continuous or cracked, sometimes poorly evident. Perithecia black, globose, prominent, 0.1-0.3(-0.4) mm across. Involucrellum extending to the base o the perithecium, purple-brown (Pseudosagedia-violet pigment), K- or K+ dark grey-brown, HCl+ red-purple to red-brown; exciple dark throughout; hamathecium of mostly simple paraphyses; hymenial gel I-, K/I-. Asci 8-spored, clavate-cylindrical, thin-walled, functionally unitunicate, I-, K/I-, the apex truncate and containing a refractive ring which stains with Congo Red. Ascospores 3-septate, hyaline, fusiform, (13-)16-25(-34) x 4-5(-6) μm. Pycnidia black, Conidia oblong-ellipsoid, 2.5-4 x c. 1 μm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.

Note: a temperate to humid subtropical, probably holarctic species found on siliceous pebbles in humid-shaded situations, mostly in deciduous forests.
