Distribution: N - Lomb, Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004). C - Sar.
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, continuous or finely rimose, olive green, pale grey-brown or dark purple-grey. Perithecia black, 0.2-0.7 mm across, scattered, half to one quarter immersed, the apical part naked. Involucrellum of thick-walled, more or less elongated cells, purple-violet or purple-brown (Pseudosagedia-violet pigment), K+ dark grey-brown, HCl+ red-purple to red-brown; exciple colourless or straw-coloured, the pigmented parts K+ orange (Porina-yellow pigment); hamathecium of simple paraphyses; hymenial gel I-, K/I-. Asci 8-spored clavate-cylindrical, thin-walled, functionally unitunicate, I-, K/I-, the apex rounded and without a ring structure. Ascospores 5-7(-9)-septate, often submuriform with 1(-2) additional longitudinal septa, hyaline, elongate-fusiform, (20-)30-45(-48) x 5-6.5 µm. Pycnidia rare, black. Microconidia c. 4.5 x 0.7-1 µm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.
Note: a cool-temperate to subarctic lichen found along mountain creeks in the montane and subalpine belts, on periodically inundated siliceous rocks, but also on very shaded, not inundated rocks near the ground; probably more widespread in the Alps.
