Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, up to 1 mm thick, whitish, pale to dark grey, blue-grey or partly rust-red, continuous to cracked-areolate, sometimes delimited by a thin, dark prothalline line, sorediate. Soralia scattered, rounded to irregular, 0.1-1 mm wide, at first discrete, finally often confluent, grey, often with a bluish tinge, when young often delimited by a thin, raised thalline rim; soredia farinose to granular. Medulla white, I+ violet-blue. Apothecia rare, lecideine, black, rounded to slightly irregular, at first innate, then sessile, 0.8-2(-3) mm across, with a flat to slightly convex, often bluish-pruinose and sometimes tuberculate disc, and a slightly raised, usually epruinose, shiny proper margin. Proper exciple dark throughout, the hyphae 2.5-4 μm thick; epithecium olive-brown, N+ orange red, K-; hymenium colourless, 70-110(-135) μm high; paraphyses coherent, branched and anastomosing, slightly swollen at tips; hypothecium dark brown. Asci 8-spored, elongate-clavate, with a thin, outer amyloid layer and a thickened tholus penetrated by a pore, the sides of which stain I/KI+ deep blue, Porpidia-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (9-)14-20(-25) x (4-)7-10(-13) μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla and soralia K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: confluentic acid (major), 2’-O-methylmicrophillinic and 2’-O-methylperlatolic acids (minor), very rarely with additional stictic or norstictic acids (in which case the soralia react K+ yellow and P+ orange). Note: on steeply inclined surfaces of siliceous rocks, or in woodlands, mostly near the ground.
