Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, white, hardly differing in colour from the rock. Apothecia orange to orange-yellow, 0.2-0.5 mm across, slightly to strongly constricted at base, totally immersed in pits or slightly protruding from the rock, at first flat, but soon moderately convex and immarginate, the disc smooth. Proper exciple poorly developed, of colourless to yellowish branched hyphae, patchily pigmented; epithecium orange-brown, 15-30 µm high, with granular crystals reacting K+ red; hymenium colourless, 45-55 µm high, hemiamyloid; paraphyses coherent, sparingly branched and anastomosing, 1.5-3.5 µm thick, the apical cells slightly swollen, 2-4.5 µm wide; hypothecium colourless to pale yellow. Asci 8-spored, elongate-clavate, with a thin, outer amyloid layer and a thickened tholus penetrated by a tube, the sides of which stain I/KI+ deep blue, Porpidia-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to ovoid, 9-13 x 4-7 µm, without a distinct perispore. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ red. Chemistry: apothecia with anthraquinones, mainly parietin.Note: a widespread temperate to circum-arctic lichen, one of the most common species on calcareous rocks in natural habitats throughout the country, with a very wide altitudinal range, reaching the nival belt in the Alps.
