Protothelenella sphinctrinoidella (Nyl.) H. Mayrhofer & Poelt

Herzogia, 7: 47, 1985. Basionym: Verrucaria sphinctrinoidella Nyl. - Flora, 47: 355, 1864.
Synonyms: Microglaena coenosa (Vain.) Zahlbr.; Microglaena geoctona Hellb.; Microglaena sphinctrinoidella (Nyl.) Arnold; Microglaena sphinctrinoides subsp. reducta Th. Fr.; Thelenella coenosa Vain.; Thelenella reducta Vain.
Distribution: N - TAA (Bilovitz & al. 2014b, Ohmura & Mayrhofer 2016, Nascimbene & al. 2022), Piem (TSB 34303).
Description: Thallus crustose, whitish to pale grey, greenish when wet, thin, continuous, often film-like and inconspicuous. Perithecia black, more or less shiny, projecting to semi-immersed, globose to slightly pyriform, 0.1-0.3 mm across. Exciple 15-20 μm thick, dull greenish brown and K+ violet in upper part, colourless towards the base, of strongly anastomosing, up to 1 μm wide, conglutinate hyphae with narrow lumina. Paraphysoids thread-like, 0.7-1 μm thick persistent, strongly branched and anastomosing; periphysoids absent; hymenial gel I+ reddish or I+ blue at low concentrations, K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, thick-walled, with two functional wall layers, the outer layer I+ dull reddish, K/I+ blue, the apex with an I+ blue, apical apparatus. Ascospores submuriform, hyaline, ellipsoid, 22-36 x 7-12 μm, the outer wall distinctly thicker than the septa. Photobiont chlorococcoid (Elliptochloris), the algal cells surrounded by a gelatinous sheath. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: on acid to subneutral soil, moribund bryophytes and lichens, more rarely on decaying plants in upland areas, often in rather disturbed habitats, e.g. along mountain track sides; certainly more widespread in the Alps, but probably overlooked.
