Description: Thallus fruticose-filamentous, decumbent to shrubby, attached by disc-like hapters, dark brown to black, isotomic- or anisotomic-dichotomously branched, the internodes 1-3(-5) mm long (rarely <1 mm), forming rather loose, entangled mats on the rock. Branches to 0.5 mm thick, usually terete throughout (rarely weakly flattened at base and tips), shiny, without vegetative diaspores and pseudocyphellae or with usually inconspicuous pseudocyphellae. Cortex compact, 2-layered, the outer layer of rectangular to irregularly isodiametrical cells, the inner layer prosoplectenchymatous, of elongated, periclinallly arranged hyphae; medulla white, the cell walls with Cetraria-type and intermediate-type lichenan. Apothecia rare, lateral, zeorine, to 5.5 mm across, with a dark brown to black disc and a usually smooth margin. Proper exciple more or less distinct, colourless, slightly gelatinized; epithecium olive-brown, K+ grey-green; hymenium colourless; paraphyses branched and anastomosing, the apical cells not capitate; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, elongate-clavate, very thin-walled, with a K/I+ blue, tall tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 7-12 x 5.5-8 μm, without a perispore. Pycnidia immersed in conspicuous, mainly axillay warts, with broadly gaping, clearly visible ostioles. Conidia slightly dumbbell-shaped, 5-7 x c. 1 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K- or rarely K+ yellow turning red, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances or rarely with usually small amounts of norstictic acid.
Note: an arctic-alpine to (more rarely) boreal-montane lichen which is ecologically similar to P. minuscula, but with a somehow broader altitudinal range; more frequent than P. minuscula in the mountains of Southern Italy.
