Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, areolate, usually pale grey with a bluish tinge, more rarely dark grey to grey-brown, often slightly pruinose, sometimes delimited by a dark prothallus, forming neat orbicular patches to a few cm across. Areoles distinctly flat, the peripheral ones often slightly elongate and separated by radiating thin cracks, giving the thallus a subplacodioid appearance. Apothecia lecanorine, 0.3-0.7 mm across, immersed in the areoles, with a usually flat, sometimes slightly pruinose, black disc, and a white or blue-white pruinose, thin, persistent thalline margin. Proper exciple poorly developed, brown in outer part, colourless to brownish within, the pigmented parts K+ violet; epithecium grey to brown, K+ violet; hymenium colourless, without crystals; paraphyses c. 1.5 μm thick at base, the apical cells up to 4-5 μm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, (9-)12-15 x 5-8 μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 3-5 μm, c. 1/3 of spore length. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K- or K+ faintly violet, C-, KC-, P-; pigmented parts of apothecia K+ violet and sometimes N+ pale violet. Chemistry: Sedifolia-grey pigment in apothecia and sometimes in thallus.Note: a mild-temperate species known from Europe and adjoining Africa and Asia, found on hard calciferous rocks (mostly on compact limestone) and dolomite, often, but not exclusively, on steeply inclined faces; especially common in Central and Southern Italy, above the Mediterranean belt.
