Description: Thallus minutely filamentous, black to brown-black, forming small tufts which often coalesce into 10-15 cm wide and 0.3-0.5 mm tall, cottony mats. Filaments 10-15 µm thick, straight, not nodulose, 0.2-1 cm long, covered with dark brown, regularly parallel hyphae with straight walls (the individual cells appearing rectangular), closely surrounding and adhering to single filaments of Trentepohlia. Apothecia and pycnidia unknown. Photobiont trentepohlioid (the chloroplasts I+ blue-black). Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances. Note: a widespread, temperate to southern boreal-montane, circumpolar lichen found on shaded, more or less steeply inclined surfaces of siliceous rocks protected from rain, with a rather wide altitudinal range; undercollected, and certainly more widespread in the Alps.
