Ramboldia russula (Ach.) Kalb, Lumbsch & Elix

Nova Hedwigia, 86: 37, 2008. Basionym: Lecidea russula Ach. - Meth. Lich., Sectio prior: 61, 1803.
Synonyms: Biatora russula (Ach.) Mont.; Protoblastenia russula (Ach.) Räsänen; Pyrrhospora russula (Ach.) Hafellner
Distribution: C - Tosc.
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, whitish grey, dull, continuous to weakly rimose, forming up to 4 cm wide patches. Apothecia lecideine/biatorine, bright red to orange-red, 0.4−0.8 mm across, with an initially flat, then soon convex disc, the young apothecia with a thin, soon excluded proper margin. Proper exciple prosoplectenchymatous, of radiating hyphae, orange in outer part, colourless within, K+ red, granular-inspersed; epithecium orange-red, with an epipsamma of fine golden yellow granules reacting K+ red; hymenium colourless; paraphyses coherent, simple or sparingly branched an anastomosing in upper part, not swollen at tips; hypothecium thick, colourless or pale orange. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the tholus with a strongly amyloid lateral part, a non-amyloid broadly diverging axial mass with a thick, non-amyloid cap above, and a weakly amyloid outer layer Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid-oblong, 10-14 x 2-3.5 µm. Pycnidia red. Conidia thread-like. Photobiont: chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ yellowish to yellowish brown, but not turning red, C-, KC-, P+ red, UV+ yellow-red; apothecia K+ red. Chemistry: thallus with lichexanthone, fumarprotocetraric acid; apothecia with russulone.
Note: a tropical species, also reported from Spain and southern France, growing on twigs and branches of evergreen trees and shrubs (Arbutus, Myrtus, etc.) in humid situations. The European records, however, including the Italian one are dubious and in need of confirmation (see Nimis: 1993: 593): they could refer to the chemically different R. lusitanica.
