Description: Thallus crustose, areolate, greenish yellow to grey-green, forming patches to 5-6 cm across, several thalli often merging to cover larger surfaces. Areoles 0.6-2 mm diam., dispersed to contiguous, smooth, matt, sometimes flat but most often convex to round, partially or totally enclosing apothecia, but typically horseshoe-shaped. Cortex 25-50 µm thick; medulla white, I+ blue. Apothecia lecideine, 0.5-1.2 mm across, one per areole (very seldom several), more or less circular, flat to concave, with a black, not pruinose disc and a thin, often finally excluded, black proper margin. Cortex cells of excipulum brownish, K+ brown-red; epithecium thin, dirty green, K+ brighter green; hymenium greenish to colourless, 160-200 µm thick; paraphysoids strongly conglutinate, richly branched and anastomosing, sometimes slightly capitate; hypothecium brown, K-. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, with a well-developed tholus, lacking an ocular chamber, Rhizocarpon-type. Ascospores muriform, blackish brown, with 15-38 cells in section, (27-)34-45(-57) x (11-)15-20(-24) µm. Photobiont: chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P+ brick red. Chemistry: cortex with rhizocarpic acid, medulla with stictic acid.Note: a temperate to boreal-montane, circumpolar lichen, most common on stonewalls, dust-impregnated siliceous boulders and roofing tiles, but also found in natural habitats, e.g. with Umbilicaria deusta.
