Nouv. Arch. Mus. Hist. Nat., Sér. 5, 2: 49, 1910.
Synonyms: Aspicilia gibbosa var. lignicola Anzi nom. nud. non (Anzi) Bagl. & Carestia; Lecanora lignicola (Hue) Zahlbr.
Distribution: N - Lomb, Piem.
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rimose at the edge, otherwise verrucose-areolate, brownish to grey-pruinose, forming well-delimited, 5-6 cm wide, ellipsoid patches on wood. Areoles angular to irregular, flat to convex, contiguous, to 1 mm wide, separated by distinct cracks. Cortex brownish in upper part, sometimes covered by an epinecral layer. Apothecia lecanorine-aspicilioid, 0.3-1.5 mm across, round to angular, crateriform, with a black, concave to flat, epruinose disc and a level to slightly raised thalline margin. Epithecium olive to olive-brown, without crystals, N- or N+ green-brown, K+ brown; hymenium colourless, 100-120(-135) µm high, I+ wine-red to yellow-green; paraphyses slightly branched and anastomosing, 1.5-1.7 µm thick, submoniliform in upper part, with globose to subglobose, 3-4 µm wide uppermost cells; hypothecium colourless, I+ dirty yellowish-red. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the thin outer coat K/I+ blue, the wall and apical dome K/I-. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to subglobose when young, 17-26 x 11-15 µm. Pycnidia with a black, punctiform ostiole. Conidia 11-19 x 0.5–1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: unknown, probably without lichen substances. Note: a poorly known species of nutrient-enriched wood, also reported from the French and Austrian Alps. According to
