Rhizocarpon lusitanicum (Nyl.) Arnold

Flora, 53: 478, 1871. Basionym: Lecidea lusitanica Nyl. - Flora, 47: 605, 1865.
Synonyms:
Distribution: C - Sar.
Description: Thallus crustose, areolate, parasitic in the thalli of Lepra-species, forming 1-3 mm wide, dull yellowish green patches on the thallus of the host (grey-white when young and edokapylic), the areoles flat, 0.2-0.3 mm across. Medulla white, I- or I+ very faintly blue. Apothecia lecideine, black, developing between the areoles, 0.2-0.4(-0.6) mm across, superficial, adpressed, often confluent, with a convex, rugose disc, soon immarginate. Proper exciple poorly developed, of conglutinated, parallel hyphae; epithecium purple-brown-black, inspersed with black granules, K+ intensely purple-red; hymenium colourless, c. 150 μm high, I+ blue; paraphysoids strongly coherent, richly branched and anastomosing, the apical cells clavate; hypothecium dark reddish brown, K-. Asci 4-6(-8)-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, with a well-developed tholus that is K/I- in lower part and K/I+ blue near the apex, lacking an ocular chamber, Rhizocarpon-type. Ascospores 3-septate to submuriform, with 5-7(-9) cells in optical view, dark brown, ellipsoid, 14-23(-28) x 7-12(-15) μm, distinctly halonate at least when young. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: cortex with rhizocarpic acid.
Note: a southern European species of siliceous rocks which starts the life-cycle on the thalli of pertusarioid lichens below the montane belt; to be looked for in other parts of Tyrrhenian Italy.
Growth form: Crustose

Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
paras Pertusaria spp.
