Rhizocarpon ochrolechiae (Poelt & Nimis) Hafellner
in Kalb & Hafellner, Herzogia, 9: 86, 1992. Basionym: Rhizocarpon lusitanicum var. ochrolechiae Poelt & Nimis in Nimis & Poelt - Studia Geobot., 7, suppl. 1: 205, 1987.
Synonyms:
Distribution: C - Sar (Brackel 2016).
Description: Thallus crustose, probably not lichenized, endoparasitic in the thalli of Ochrolechia parella, forming 1-3 mm wide, dark grey patches on the thallus of the host. Apothecia lecideine, black, 03-0.9(-1.1) mm across, superficial, adpressed, often confluent, with a convex, rugose disc, soon immarginate. Exciple poorly developed, of conglutinated, parallel hyphae; epithecium purple-brown, granulose, K+ intensely purple; hymenium colourless, c. 150 μm high, I+ blue; hamathecium of strongly conglutinate, richly branched and anastomosing, 3-4 μm thick, apically clavate paraphysoids; hypothecium dark reddish brown, K-. Asci 4-8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, with a well-developed tholus, lacking an ocular chamber, Rhizocarpon-type. Ascospores submuriform, dark brown, with 5-9 cells in optical view, ellipsoid, (18-)20-35(-40) x (10-)13-17(-19) μm, distinctly halonate. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: no lichen substances in thallus. Note: a lichenicolous fungus growing on base-rich siliceous rocks, on the thalli of Ochrolechia parella; related to Rh. lusitanicum, but differing in the absence of a green thallus, perhaps more widespread in Tyrrhenian Italy.
