Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, or very thinly episubstratic and then whitish to grey, usually poorly evident. Apothecia 0.2-0.6(-0.8) mm across, cryptolecanorine, immersed in pits in the rock, with a flat, usually epruinose, brown to black disc and a thin, concolorous or paler proper margin; thalline margin absent. Proper exciple brown in outer part, colourless within; epithecium dark brown, up to 20 µm high, K-; hymenium colourless, 80-100 µm high, not inspersed with oil droplets; paraphyses mostly simple, 1.5-2.5 μm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 5-8 μm wide, with an internal brown pigment cap; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, ellipsoid, (13-)16-22 x 9-13 μm, Bischoffii-type, with a broad pigmented band around septum, the torus not developed, the ontogeny of type A (apical wall thickening after septum formation). Pycnidia rare. Conidia colourless, bacilliform, c. 4 x 1 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: a mainly southern species found on horizontal to steeply inclined, dry surfaces of limestone and (more rarely) dolomite wetted by rain, but also on pebbles, exceptionally reaching the Alpine belt.
