Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic or partly endosubstratic, smooth to small-verruculose, golden yellow, orange-yellow to yellowish grey in shade forms, rarely delimited by a thin whitish prothallus, with a thin phenocortex. Apothecia 0.5-1.3 mm across, with a flat to convex, reddish orange disc, and a moderately thick, smooth or weakly crenulate, orange margin. Thalline exciple very thin in upper part, to l00 µm thick in lower part, of intertwined, thick-walled, c. 3 µm thick hyphae with c. 1 µm thick lumina, prosoplectenchymatous in lower part; proper exciple conspicuously enlarged towards the margin, of thick-walled hyphae; epithecium orange-brown, K+ red, C-; hymenium colourless, c. 70 µm high; paraphyses simple or branched in upper part, the terminal cells swollen, (3-)5(-6) µm wide, a few of them with 1-3 broadly ellipsoid 4-6 µm wide terminal cells filled with oil; hypothecium rather thin, with a few oil droplets and hence transparent. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid to subglobose, (9-)10-13(-15) x 5-7.5(-8.5) μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) (3.5-)4-6 µm (1/4-1/2 of spore length). Pycnidia numerous, immersed in 0.2-0.3 mm wide, orange-red warts. Conidia hyaline, ellipsoid to narrowly ellipsoid, 2-3 x 0.7-1.5 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ red, C-, KC-, P-, UV+ orange; apothecial disc C-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997). Note: a temperate species growing on broad-leaved trees, most common in humid areas in the mountains; certainly more widespread in the Alps, but overlooked, or confused with other taxa. The inclusion of this species into Athallia, while the very similar C. flavorubescens is included in Gyalolechia (Arup & al. 2013), may appear quite surprising, but, besides molecular differences, the former has smaller ascospores, shorter and ellipsoid conidia, and lacks fragilin, a substance which is always present in Gyalolechia (Vondrák & al. 2016).
