Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, greyish brown to pale brown, granular-warty to coralloid. Apothecia lecideine, at first reddish brown, then black or brown-black, sessile, constricted at base, 0.5-1.5 mm across, with a matt, flat, smooth disc and a thick, smooth, often inrolled and shiny proper margin. Exciple paraplectenchymatous, of radially arranged hyphae, dark in outer part, paler within; epithecium blackish blue-green; hymenium colourless or partly yellowish brown, 100-120 µm high; paraphyses weakly branched and anastomosing, slender, 1-1.5 µm thick, slightly thickened at apex; hypothecium brown, with scattered reddish granules. Asci 2-4-spored, clavate to cylindrical-clavate, the apical dome K/I+ dark blue with a pale, conical-pointed apical cushion (axial mass), the wall I-, but the thin outer gel I+ blue, Bacidia-type. Ascospores strongly muriform, hyaline (becoming pale brown when overmature), broadly to narrowly ellipsoid, 22-41 x 9-15 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances. Note: a mainly arctic-alpine species found on soil and moribund bryophytes over siliceous substrata, reaching the nival belt. Very rare, but probably more widespread in the Alps.
