Scytinium parvum (Degel.) Otálora, P.M. Jørg. & Wedin
Fungal Divers., 64, 1: 291, 2013. Basionym: Collema parvum Degel. - Symb. Bot. Upsal., 13, 2: 273, 1954.
Synonyms: Collema leptogioides auct. p.p. non Anzi
Distribution: N - VG (TSB 5736), Frl (TSB 7946), Lomb. C - Abr. S - Camp (Nimis & Tretiach 2004).
Description: Thallus small-foliose to subcrustose-placodioid, gelatinous when wet, forming up to 1.5 cm wide, orbicular rosettes which often tend to die centrally leaving a ring of lobes. Lobes dull, black to rarely brown-black, neatly radiating, convex to flattened, strongly adpressed, (0.1-)0.2-0.3(-0.4) mm broad, 130-215 µm thick when wet; central parts of thallus with scattered to dense, globose to oblong, up to 0.1 mm thick isidia. Upper and lower cortices only partially developed, sometimes present only on the lower surface, consisting of 1-2 layers of isodiametrical cells, the layer inbetween not paraplectenchymatous, of intertwined hyphae and loosely arranged chains of Nostoc. Apothecia and pycnidia unknown. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc, the cells in chains, individual cells globose to oblong, 4-7 µm in diam., the surrounding jelly I+ deep wine-red). Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances. Note: on steeply inclined seepage tracks of calcareous rocks with colonies of cyanobacteria, most frequent in upland areas; certainly much overlooked or confused with other species in Italy.
