Description: Thallus crustose-subsquamulose, episubstratic, bright orange to brownish yellow, of small, flat, c. 0.5 mm wide, scattered to contiguous subsquamulose areoles developing on a black hypothallus. Cortex paraplectenchymatous, 15-30 µm thick, inspersed with crystals of anthraquinones; medulla thin, inconspicuous. Apothecia zeorine, adnate, 0.2-0.6 mm across, with an orange to red-orange, flat to convex disc and a smooth, paler, persistent proper margin. Proper exciple paraplectenchymatous, brownish orange in outer part, colourless within, the pigmented parts K+ red; epithecium orange-brown, K+ red; hymenium colourless, 60-80 µm high; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched in upper part, c. 1.5 μm thick at base, the apical cells slightly swollen, 2-3(-5) μm wide; hypothecium colourless, the lower part paraplectenchymatous, with 3-5 μm wide cells. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, broadly ellipsoid, (9-)10-13(-15) x (4.5-)6-8 μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 3-5 μm (1/4-1/2 of spore length). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin, fallacinal, emodin, and teloschistin.Note: a mild-temperate to subtropical, widespread lichen found on steeply inclined, sunny surfaces of basic siliceous rocks, often with Peltula euploca, but less bound to seepage tracks.
