Synonyms: Sphaeromphale areolata var. clopimoides (Bagl. & Carestia) Dalla Torre & Sarnth.
Distribution: N - Frl (CLU4624), TAA (Nascimbene & al. 2022), Lomb, Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rimose, smooth, copper-brown. Perithecia black, immersed in the thallus and slightly projecting only with the flattened uppermost part. Exciple pale brown in lower part, darker and merged with the involucrellum in the upper half; hymenium I+ blue; hymenial algae oblong or narrowly oblong, straight or curved; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids; interascal filaments absent. Asci 2-spored, clavate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, after dehiscence with a delicate extruded endotunica, I-, K/I-. Ascospores muriform, brown, ellipsoid, 38-50 x 14-21 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid (Stichococcus), present in both thallus and hymenium. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a probably circumboreal-montane freshwater species found on siliceous rocks in creeks near and above treeline; restricted to the Alps in Italy.
