Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic but thin and often indistinct, brownish to pale cream-coloured, more evident when wet. Perithecia black, immersed at base in shallow pits in the rock, forming conical-hemispherical projections 0.35-0.5 mm across, the surface naked, rough and sometimes with indistinct radial fissures. Exciple pale, except around the ostiole; involucrellum well-developed; hymenial gel I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of iodine), K/I+ blue; hymenial algae isodiametrical to broadly ellipsoid, 1-1.5 times as long as wide, 2-5 μm wide; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent. Asci 2-spored, clavate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, after dehiscence with a delicate extruded endotunica, I-, K/I-. Ascospores muriform, brown to dark brown, oblong-ellipsoid, (30-)36-40(-50) x 12-24 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid, present in both thallus and hymenium. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.Note: on more or less calciferous rocks in the mountains.
