Stenhammarella turgida (Ach.) Hertel

Beih. Nova Hedwigia, 24: 125, 1967. Basionym: Biatora turgida Ach. - Lichenogr. Univ.: 273, 1810.
Synonyms: Lecidea albocaerulescens var. turgida (Ach.) Ach.; Lecidea turgida (Ach.) A. Dietr.; Porpidia turgida (Ach.) Cl. Roux & P. Clerc; Stenhammara turgida (Ach.) Körb.
Distribution: N - Frl, Ven (Ravera & al. 2021), TAA (Hertel & Schuhwerk 2010, Nascimbene & al. 2022), Lomb, Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004), Emil (Tretiach & al. 2008, Fariselli & al. 2020), Lig. C - Tosc.
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, chalky white, 0.3-1.7 mm thick, continuous to rarely weakly rimose, sometimes delimited by a dark prothallus. Medulla white, I- (rarely I+ pale blue). Apothecia lecideine, at first immersed, then slightly emergent, with a dark brown to black, initially punctiform (young apothecia appearing almost perithecioid), then expanded disc, and a very thick, grey-pruinose, raised, persistent proper margin tending to become thinner and less prominent with age. Proper exciple black and carbonaceous, in the upper part, finally sometimes extending below the hymenium, K-, N+ purple; epithecium olive or greenish brown, N+ purple, 15-25(-40) µm high; hymenium colourless, 130-190 µm high; paraphyses strongly coherent, sparingly branched and richly anastomosing c. 1.8 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cell to 2.5 µm high; hypothecium pale to middle brown, 80-250 µm high. Asci 8-spored, elongate-clavate, with a thin, outer amyloid layer and a thickened tholus penetrated by a tube, the sides of which stain I/KI+ deep blue, Porpidia-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline ellipsoid, 20-35 x 11-20 µm, halonate when young. Pycnidia immersed, with punctiform to comma-shaped ostiolar region. Conidia bacilliform, 12-17 x c. 1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.
Note: a specialist of rocks which contain a low percentage of calcium carbonate, mostly found on steeply inclined, north-exposed and rather humid faces near or above treeline; also known from northwestern Yunnan and perhaps restricted to the Alps and the Northern Apennines in Italy. The record from Tuscany (Nimis 1993: 671) is dubious, but is still accepted here, as the presence of this species in the Northern Apennines is not impossible.
