Description: Thallus crustose, rimose-areolate, dark brown to olive-brown or olive-grey, epruinose, consisting of up to 0.5 mm wide, flat to convex areoles. Upper cortex absent or very poorly developed, up to 40 μm thick, lacking crystals; medulla white, lacking crystals. Apothecia lecideine, black, epruinose, up to 0.8 mm across, at first flat and distinctly marginate, then slightly convex and immarginate. Proper exciple dark reddish brown in outer part, paler within, K-, N-; epithecium dark green, K-, N+ violet; hymenium colourless, 50-60 μm high; paraphyses not conglutinated, simple or sparingly branched and anastomosing in upper part, thin-walled, the apical cell distinctly swollen and covered by a gelatinous pigment cap; hypothecium dark brown, often faintly greenish and N+ violet in uppermost part. Asci 8-spored, clavate, surrounded by a gelatinous I+ blue coat, with a well-developed I+ blue tholus with a darker blue tube and a well-developed ocular chamber, Bacidia-type. Ascospores 3-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid to shortly bacilliform, often slightly curved or tear-shaped, 13-17.5 x 5-6.5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.Note: a very poorly known, perhaps Mediterranean-Atlantic species of maritime siliceous rocks.
