Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rimose to areolate, the areoles up to 0.8(-1.2) mm wide, adjacent, flat to slightly convex, yellowish to reddish brown, epruinose. Cortex up to 40 µm thick, lacking calcium oxalate crystals and an epinecral layer; medulla white, often with crystals of calcium oxalates. Apothecia lecideine, black, 0.2-0.8 mm across, with a flat to finally convex, epruinose or faintly pruinose disc, and a thin, soon excluded proper margin. Proper exciple greenish brown to dark green in outer part, pale brown to reddish brown within, without crystals; epithecium bright to dark green, K-, N+ violet, without crystals 7-16(-20) µm high; hymenium colourless, 50-75 μm high; paraphyses easily made free, 1.5-2.5 µm thick, the apical cells clavate, up to 6.5 µm wide, surrounded by a pigmented gel; hypothecium dark reddish brown, (70-)90-135(-160) µm high. Asci 8-spored, clavate, surrounded by a gelatinous I+ blue coat, with a well-developed I+ blue tholus, a I+ darker blue tube and a well-developed ocular chamber, Bacidia-type. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, ellipsoid, 10-15.5 x 4.5-6 µm. Pycnidia black, immersed or partly projecting. Conidia filiform. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances, or with unknown terpenoids.
Note: an incompletely holarctic lichen of dry areas, found on limestone, dolomite, calciferous sandstone and schists in open situations, most common in dry grasslands, with a wide altitudinal range.
