Distribution: C - Tosc (Benesperi & al. 2006b), Laz. S - Bas (Bartoli & Puntillo 1996, 1998), Cal (CLU 10255), Si (Ottonello & Puntillo 2009, Ottonello & al. 2011).
Description: Thallus crustose, partly endosubstratic but mostly episubstratic, continuous, smooth or uneven, dark green, 50-60 µm thick, forming up to to 20-30 cm2 wide patches. Perithecia globose, 0.5-0.7 mm across, immersed in the thallus or developing singly inside thalline warts, almost completely covered with a thalline layer, only the pale ostiole being visible from above. Exciple colourless, 50-80 µm wide, of short-celled hyphae, with short, straight, stiff, colourless periphyses around the ostiole; paraphyses c. 1.5 µm thick, septate, simple, straight, not thickened at apex; hypothecium golden yellow, densely inspersed with oil droplets which are present also in the lower part of the hymenium. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, narrowly cylindrical, tapering apically, without apical thickening or apparatus, with uniseriately arranged spores. Ascospores densely muriform, hyaline, ellipsoid, 20-30 x 8-12 µm, with a thin, often inapparent perispore. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances. Note: known from Italy and the Iberian Peninsula, this species grows on the bark of ancient trees in humid, but open evergreen forests, often near the base of the trunks, and is probably restricted to Tyrrhenian Italy. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Vulnerable” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
