Synonyms: Gyrophora grisea (Hoffm.) Turner & Borrer; Gyrophora murina (Ach.) Ach.; Umbilicaria murina (Ach.) DC.
Distribution: N - TAA, Lomb (De Vita & Valcuvia 2004), Piem (TSB s.n.), VA (Valcuvia 2000). C - Sar (Nöske 2000). S - Bas (Potenza 2006, Potenza & Fascetti 2012, Lich. Ital. Exs. 52: Isocrono & al. 2021), Cal (Puntillo 1996), Si (Caniglia & Grillo 2003).
Description: Thallus foliose-umbilicate, heteromerous, dorsiventral, monophyllous, adpressed to the substrate, 1-6(-8) cm diam., c. 0.2 mm thick, even or slightly raised only over the umbilicus, attached by a single, short central holdfast, the margins moderately incised and folded, sometimes lacerate, slightly down-turned. Upper surface dark grey brown, distinctly rimose, weakly areolate in central parts, white-pruinose and sorediate toward margins. Lower surface dark brown to black, distinctly areolate around the umbilicus, without trabeculae; rhizinomorphs absent or, rarely, single to weakly branched, concolorous with lower cortex; thalloconidia absent. Upper cortex 10-18 µm thick; medulla white, loose in upper part, well differentiated from the scleroplectenchymatous, brown lower cortex. Apothecia rare, black, gyrodisc, 0.5-1.5 mm across. Epithecium brown; hymenium colourless to brownish, often divided into compartments by columns of sterile tissue; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched, the apical cells more or less swollen; hypothecium thick, dark. Asci 8-spored, clavate, thick-walled, with an amyloid apical dome, Umbilicaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled hyaline, ellipsoid, 13-17 x -7.5-9(-10) µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-. Chemistry: medulla with gyrophoric acid and small amounts of lecanoric and umbilicaric acids.
Note: on steeply inclined to rain-sheltered surfaces of siliceous rocks only slightly wetted after rain, usually below the Alpine belt.
Growth form: Foliose, umbilicate
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by soredia, or soredia-like structures (e.g. blastidia)
In underhangs rarely wetted by rain
