Umbilicaria hyperborea (Ach.) Hoffm.
Deutschl. Fl., 2: 110, 1796. Basionym: Lichen hyperboreus Ach. - K. Vetensk.-Akad. Nya Handl., 15: 89, 1794.
Synonyms: Gyrophora aenea var. hyperborea (Ach.) Schaer.; Gyrophora hyperborea (Ach.) Ach.; Gyrophora hyperborea var. primaria Th. Fr.; Gyrophora ustulata (Vain.) Dalla Torre & Sarnth.
Distribution: N - Ven, TAA (Nascimbene & al. 2022), Lomb, Piem (Isocrono & al. 2004), VA (Piervittori & Isocrono 1999). S - Bas (Potenza & al. 2014).
Description: Thallus foliose-umbilicate, heteromerous, dorsiventral, monophyllous, attached by a central holdfast, rigid and fragile, irregular in outline, (2-)4–6(-10) cm wide, deeply dissected, the edges down-turned, lacerated and often with oval perforations. Upper surface uniformly dark brown, sometimes paler towards the centre, covered with narrow, irregular, vermiform ridges often extending to margins and not forming a network. Lower surface uniformly dark brown, darker and almost black around umbilicus, paler towards the margins, smooth or occasionally dimpled, erhizinate or with very few rhizinomorphs, without thalloconidia. Upper cortex dark brown, 6-15 µm thick; medulla white, very loose under the ridges; lower cortex scleroplectenchymatous, 15–25 µm thick. Apothecia common, gyrodisc, black, sessile, mainly located between ridges over the whole upper surface except around the umbilicus, 1-1.5(-2) mm across. Epithecium brown; hymenium colourless; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched, the apical cells more or less swollen; hypothecium dark. Asci 8-spored, clavate, thick-walled, with an amyloid apical dome, Umbilicaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled hyaline, ellipsoid, (7-)13-16(-20) x (3-)5-8 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-. Chemistry: medulla with gyrophoric and umbilicaric acids, plus small amounts of lecanoric acid. Note: an arctic-alpine, probably circumpolar lichen found on siliceous boulders wetted by rain, usually near the ground, with optimum near treeline; probably restricted to the Alps in Italy.
