Description: Thallus foliose-umbilicate, heteromerous, dorsiventral, monophyllous but often deeply dissected and appearing polyphyllous, 2-3(-5) cm wide, attached by a thick, black central holdfast, with often lacerate and perforate, ascending and undulating margins. Upper surface dark brown, sometimes with a thin white necrotic layer over the umbilicus, rugose with even, smooth whenvermiform ridges, towards the margins more or less young, later rugose, especially in central parts. Lower surface sooty black, sometimes slightly paler at margins, smooth, even or dimpled, erhizinate; thalloconidia simple, rarely 1-septate, spherical, (4-)6-9(-11) x (4-)5-6(-11) µm, dark brown, covering the whole lower surface except sometimes the marginal zone. Upper cortex dark brown, 10-20 µm thick; medulla white, 50-150 µm thick; lower cortex 10-20 µm thick. Apothecia very rare, black, gyrodisc. Epithecium brown; hymenium colourless; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched, the apical cells more or less swollen; hypothecium dark. Ascospores 1-celled hyaline, 7-14 x 5-7 µm. Pycnidia mainly marginal on upper surface, immersed, globose, with a dark brown ostiole. Conidia bacilliform. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-. Chemistry: medulla with gyrophoric, lecanoric and umbilicaric acids. Note: an arctic-alpine, probably circumpolar lichen found on the top of isolated siliceous boulders, most frequent in the Alps above treeline, but reaching south to the mountains of Calabria.
