Umbilicaria subglabra (Nyl.) Harm.
Lich. France, 4: 707, 1910. Basionym: Gyrophora subglabra Nyl. - Lich. Envir. Paris: 135, 1896.
Synonyms: Agyrophora subglabra (Nyl.) M. Choisy; Umbilicaria subglabra var. schmidtii Frey?
Distribution: N - Frl (Codogno 1995), TAA, Lomb (CLU 688), Piem (Isocrono & al. 2006), VA (HAL-782).
Description: Thallus foliose-umbilicate, heteromerous, dorsiventral, monophyllous, but ften deeply dissected appearing polyphyllous, more or less circular in outline, rigid, often with ragged margins, 1-3(-6) cm wide, 0.1-0.2 mm thick, attached by a central holdfast. Upper surface pale to dark grey, dull, smooth to minutely roughened, with a white necral layer centrally, and a few short folds or ridges or numerous fine striae radiating from the umbo. Lower surface smooth, dull, grey or patchily sooty black where covered with dark brown, simple or rarely 1-septate, spherical, delicately roughened, c. 7-7.5 µm wide thalloconidia. Upper cortex 10-20 µm thick; algal layer discontinuous; medulla white, 45-80 µm thick, well differentiated from lower cortex; lower cortex scleroplectenchymatous, 14–24 µm, thick. Apothecia rare, black, leiodisc. Epithecium black-brown; hymenium colourless; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched, with enlarged apical cells; hypothecium brown. Asci 8-spored, elongate-clavate, thick-walled, with an amyloid apical dome, Umbilicaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, 10-20 x 3-7 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-. Chemistry: medulla with gyrophoric acid, plus small amounts of lecanoric and umbilicaric acids. Note: on steeply inclined to horizontal, exposed surfaces of siliceous rocks, often at the top of large boulders; certainly widespread throughout the Alps.
