Distribution: C - Tosc (Ravera & al. 2022), Sar (Lo Forti & al. 2004).
Description: Thallus crustose-placodioid, episubstratic, bright golden yellow, epruinose, forming (1-)2-3(-4) cm wide, orbicular rosettes. Central part of thallus verrucose-areolate; marginal lobes contiguous, convex, smooth or with parallel furrows, 2-3 mm long, the apices slightly broader and somewhat shiny, 0.3-0.7(-1) mm wide. Cortex patchily covered with a layer of an amorphous extracellular substance hiding the cortical cells; medulla white. Apothecia zeorine, mostly confined to the central area, 0.3-0.8(-1) mm across, round to angular, with an orange-brown (darker than thallus), epruinose, at first flat, then convex disc, and a paler, often finally excluded margin. Epithecium orange, K+ red; hymenium colourless; paraphyses simple or forked, c. 2 μm thick at base, with slightly swollen apical cells; hypothecium colourless. hyaline, very variable, Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid when young, but soon becoming rhombic to lemon-shaped, 11-16(-19) x (5-)8-10(-11) µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 4-5 µm (1/2-1/3 of spore length). Pycnidia reddish brown. Conidia bacilliform. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).Note: a mainly Atlantic species confined to the salt-spray belt, reported from a single station in western Sardinia.
